An intensive weekend workshop in which the student researches the granting process from submitting the letter of intent to filing the final report.

InterArts Movement Workshop 66 – 5814
Sound in Context* 66 – 6111

This class will focus on music and sound as they function as an auxiliary element in a work rather than as an end in itself. Students will develop individual projects, which will range from performance work to objects and installations which incorporate sound.

Performance Aesthetics 66 – 6115
This studio course is for graduate students interested in creating performances inspired by four distinct performance styles: the body work of early Feminist artists, Drag Queens & Kings, the text – based theatre of Wooster Group, and Japanese street performance called Butoh.

Documentation 66 – 6116
This class will explore the way changes of medium impact content. Students will begin with a work of art (preferably a performance work or time – based installation), which they have created prior to the class. This work will then be re – created in different media, including photography, video, and sound, as well as in forms such as artist’s books or CD – ROMS and other interactive media. Discussion will focus on how the work’s content is both preserved and changed by these shifts in media.

Papermaking Studio 66 – 6440
Exploration of hand papermaking techniques with an emphasis on learning the fibers and sheet forming techniques to produce specific products. This includes Eastern, Western and local indigenous fibers and technical information about refinements such as watermarking, 3 – D techniques and coloring methods.

Text and New Media Imagery* 66 – 6515
Technology has the ability to generate a global dialogue and create distinct experiences for participants. Students will write text and create images using collage techniques inherent in the interactive capabilities of electronic literature, interpreting their work through the rhythm and flow of text through time, layering and interweaving images and sound.

Movement – Video* 66 – 6520
In this class, students will learn fundamental techniques in conceptualizing, planning, producing, (shooting and editing) & critiques of video presentations of individual artistic work. The coursework will lead students through a view of contemporary video and digital media works by leading artists, and it will equip students with the basic skill sets needed to execute their own ideas using video camera and digital non – linear editing systems.

Fictional Documentary Workshop* 66 – 6525
This advance workshop intends to explore the line that separates documentary and narrative media. Students will examine the works of documentarians who are using fictional elements and narrative techniques in their work and who question concepts of truth and reality to expand the definition of documentary.

MFA Media Workshop* 66 – 6719
In this course students will collaborate on the production of various digital media for special projects in the school and the department. In – class assignments will address the aesthetic issues of 2 – D design, advanced video editing strategies, advanced sequencing and compositing techniques, and motion graphic techniques. Projects may include public art installations/performances and visiting artist collaborations. ‘

Mentorships 66 – 6727

The Mentorship experience in the M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts & Media is an opportunity to study with an acknowledged expert in the area of the student’s concentrations. The mentorship may be pursued in any region of the country.
