Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Arts and Media MFA website.

Columbia College Chicago is the nation’s largest arts and communications college, located in the heart of Chicago’s vibrant downtown. In 2002, Columbia College began offering the Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media, a degree situated within an interdisciplinary arts program that has existed for nearly 30 years. This comprehensive 60-credit program is designed for artists, writers, performers, composers and media artists with the drive and discipline to integrate media into their personal creative vision.

Within the program’s interdisciplinary framework, students examine five major disciplines in the arts (visual, sound, movement, literary and dramatic). The focused media arts core provides the conceptual and technical skills necessary to work in new and emerging media arts such as video installation, interactive forms, and performance with integrated media. In collaboration with the Television Department at Columbia College Chicago, the Interdisciplinary Arts Department offers a broad cross-section of courses to provide students with the creative environments and access to emerging technology. This interplay between the five disciplines and the opportunity to work with emerging media technology encourages unique and daring work.

Students learn hands-on from artists and performers who themselves have excelled in their own creative pursuits. The program’s faculty is comprised of a diverse array of accomplished visual artists, composers, choreographers, writers and media artists as well as nationally acclaimed visiting artists and theorists. Given the interdisciplinary nature of this program, collaboration between its students is greatly encouraged; it is this opportunity to share ideas across various media that produces superlative individual and collaborative work from our students.

Interested individuals are encouraged to visit the Interdisciplinary Arts and Media MFA. Please contact (312)344-7669 to arrange for a tour, request a brochure and application. The deadline for application to the program is February 15th each year.
